Project Four Photos

 Photography Advanced

Final Project

Tessa Georgoulakos

I took this image using tripod in my dark hallway and holding two different colored phones to each side of my face. First I cropped the image because my hand was showing in it and I made it more even.  To make my canvas a little bigger I used the marque tool and used Edit > Fill > Content Aware and Photoshop generated the rest of the background. Using the pen tool I created a triangle around my face. I then adjusted Color Overlay, Inner Glow, Outer Glow, Drop Shadow. I added another triangle over that and changed the stroke size and set that layer as Linear Dodge (Add). I then reduced the Fill to 20%. Put them into a group and applied a layer mask to them from the subject. The closest tube had to be in front so I brushed over that part with the white. I added a new layer for the neon color to be behind the subject and set that to Linear Dodge (Add) so it looked like the glow was behind the head as well. I used smoke brushes I downloaded to add a fog around my subject. I used some blue as well in a separate layer and set the layer value to Soft Light while adjusting opacity. I placed a grain texture above and set it to Color Dodge so it was barely visible and applied Gaussian Blur to take the edge off of the texture.

Summary Statement:

I had a lot of fun taking this picture with using different lighting and also editing it. I really enjoyed using the tripod with my pictures and taking them myself to edit because I don't really like editing other people so much. Creating the glow effect was new and fun to me. I also liked using the new brushes I downloaded for this project. I would have like to adjust the triangle better because I think its more leaning against one side and I would change it to the middle next time. I really enjoyed doing these kind of photography editing because its new to me and I am learning so much as I go.

For this one I created a new canvas and imported my layer mask into the canvas. Then I transformed the image to fit. I converted it to a smart layer and then rasterized the layer. I then created a selection around my subjects head with the pen tool and separated it. Then I made another selection with the pen tool and made it for the inside of the head and used paint bucket to color it in a skin tone. After that I created a clipping mask and used a darker color for the inside to shade it. I then placed a flower in the image and positioned it as if it was inside of the head. I continued with more flowers. I added a rectangle tool, ellipse, and a white gradient above and purple gradient below the subject. I added, inner glow, outer glow, and a stroke to add some dimension.

Summary Statement:

I wanted to do an image where flowers were coming out of the subjects head. This was a very time consuming project. Adding each flower and copying, pasting, adding layer masks, and transforming them into the right spots. The hair from the subject was tricky as well with the background, I had a hard time making it look perfect so I added the stroke so it didn't look as bad. Otherwise I might have probably left out the white stroke around the subject.

To create the vintage look I first used a paper texture because old photos were paper not digital. I dropped the warm colored paper texture on top of the image and changed the blend mode to Multiply. Then I added another texture for dust and dirt because old photos usually collect that either on the print or film. I imported that texture over the photo and changed the blending mode to Multiply so it shows the dust and dirt. Then I lifted some of the dark out by changing the Curves. I made a layer mask and used the brush and painted out a few areas that were on her face where I didn't want the dust to appear. After this, I added another image which was for the scratches and set the blending mode to Screen and adjusted the Curves level of it. I then added some orange spots on a new layer using the brush tool and set that blending mode to Soft Light to look like some color had been changing/fading.

Summary Statement:

The first photograph was kind of blurry to begin with so I thought it would be a good start to make a vintage look on it. I think I would add more to this photo such as lines and more contrasting texture but overall I think it looks pretty similar to what I was trying to do.

I used the pen tool to cut out the face and deleted the background and applied a layer mask. I then created two solid color layers underneath the subject. The first is grey and the second color layer I used an elliptical marquise tool and created a circle around the subject and then inverting the selection so it shows the darker grey beneath it, increasing the feather of the mask to make it look light and gradual, then used a Gaussian Blur. I made the subject black and white by using the adjustment layer panel and created a clipping mask to my subject. I used the ellipse tool and drew a path on each layer using guides. Each selection was separated by clicking the paths and select > inverting them. I selected all the paths and created a Solid Fill Color Layer for each of them and then separating each layer with its color fill and moving them.

Summary Statement:

This one didn't come out how I wanted it to because there is some transparency between them. I don't know what I did wrong to make it that way but I wanted the subject to stay its solid color. It was a lot of steps I did to create this, if I have more time I will go back and look at my layers and what I've done differently. I would also create shadows between the layers when I have more time to. Overall I think it came out pretty good for someone who hasn't edited in a long time.

I first used the pen tool to shape and cut out my face. I copied and cut out the section in a new layer. In the first layer I then made a layer mask with the selection. I made two more copies of the cut out layer for the edge and depth. In the edge layer I added a solid color then color overlay and changed it to a brown. I put a pattern overlay and used a grainy texture. I went into the depth layer and put an inner shadow and a color overlay. I selected the move tool and press the right arrow keys a couple of times to move the layer over. For the main face I went to blending options and I applied an inner glow and set it to soft light. I then put a drop shadow on it to give it a better look. I rotated an image. I embedded the flowers that I downloaded for the image and put them underneath the main face layer. I erased and fixed some of the flowers and created layer masks with them. I grouped the flowers and made a new layer with a clipping mask on it for the face shadow. I cut out another piece of the face and repeated the same steps as before and added a few new flowers. I grouped the layers and changed the image to black and white except for the flower layers. I removed and changed the background then added noise and a drop shadow.

Summary Statement:

This one took the longest to create for me. I didn't realize at first how time consuming it would be but for someone like me who doesn't edit like this too often, it took me a few hours. So I really like how it came out because I took so much time on it. I had a hard time selecting the image because of the background and the hair.

Comments

  1. I like the glowing triangle with you..., the high ISO of the original photo contributes to the noise/softness which may be a good or bad thing? The second one where your head is split open is good. Perhaps less head room? I like how the original photo was framed. The Vintage photo is interesting, it would be neat to see it as a sepia tone or B&W. The blog doesn't do the split head justice. It looks way more interesting on Flickr. Consider adding Flickr URL's in the future. As for the last one in this blog, it's good, but not my favorite out of what is posted in the blog. Looking at the Flickr site you left several posted there out of the write-up. The Rabbit in the ocean, two of your daughter which I am not sure what you did with that, and a picture of you holding two frames where you cut and pasted parts of your face into the frame parts. Why are these not included in the write-up?
