To improve the brightness in these shots, I messed about with the levels and curves. I also tweaked the hue/saturation, sharpness, added a Photo Filter, and increased the vibrance. Finally, I increased the image's contrast adjustment. I tweaked a few things to make this photo look better while still appearing to be unfiltered.

Summary Statement:

I believe the color and tweaks I made were successful. In editing, I was astonished at how much a little could go a long way. I believe I could do a lot better in these areas. For some regions that I wish to edit, I now know how to use the dodge and burn tools. For instance, in the first photograph, I would like to make more adjustments to the lighting in the backdrop and on my subject. It was difficult for me to figure out how to lighten just her face to make it easier to see so I see now how my issues could be fixed. Instead of focusing on the full picture next time, I'll go in afterward and make individual modifications as needed.

On top of the photograph, I applied a color overlay with the Soft Light setting. To isolate my subject and the slide she's on from the overlay and see them clearly, I created a masked layer for the background. I also tweaked the hue/saturation, vibrance, and brightness. To make the shot more merged together, I used an orange photo filter to the entire image. I like how the background is rendered and how she pops out in the image.

Summary Statement:

I'm not sure if this was the best photo to use or if I should have gone with a color headshot, but I had a lot of fun working with it and experimenting with other choices. I enjoyed doing a colorful edit with the masked layer. I layered one colorful image over my own and blended them in a lively and exciting way. I'd make a few additional colors in front of her next time, rather than just behind her. In this picture, I intended to convey a sense of wonder and joy. In comparison, the first appeared to be quite dull, therefore I appreciate how it turned out in the end.

First, I used the clone tool to make changes to her face. I was able to make it appear as though she had no chips on her mouth. Using the pen tool, I made changes to the wall behind my subject. I was able to make the wall blue by changing the color. I also used hue.saturation and masked layers to separate her from the background. For a more lively look, the brightness/contrast was also boosted. Overall, I think there are a few things I could do to better this photo, that I think I should play with more color and editing with the pen tool.

Summary Statement:

In the picture, I enjoyed utilizing the pen tool and adjustment/hue layers. I believe this was the ideal image to retouch on. I chose it because it matched the example I provided. I had some issues with the pen tool, so I had to go back in and repair it. With additional time, I believe I could improve the appearance. I discovered a few additional ways I could have modified this photograph. Overall, doing this assignment was a good lesson in which I learned a lot.

To avoid the photo looking crooked, I started by cropping and altering the horizon to make it a straight horizontal line. I then brushed over the spot I wished to remove using the spot healing brush and content aware type. I went over it with the clone stamp to make it look undisturbed because it was hazy. After that, I tweaked the brightness/contrast layer, made some minor adjustments, then applied the Camera Raw Filter.

Summary Statement:

I genuinely love being outside, and my subject does too. I wanted to portray one of our favorite places, the beach, where we watch the sunset. In this shot, I think I did it well. There were some flaws in my image that I wanted to address, and I think I did a nice job of it. I had some issues with the content aware type, so I went back in and used the clone tool to repair it so it didn't appear photoshopped. I used the crop tool to straighten the image, and I really like how it turned out. I didn't have to change the colors much because I liked how the sunset turned out.
